For the second session of Squire Patton Boggs' Autonomous Driving Discussion Series, we will bring together a thought-provoking panel of industry leaders who focus on cybersecurity and privacy issues in relation to autonomous vehicles.
Like all technological innovation, the threat of cyber breaches in autonomous vehicles is real, as recently shown by white hat hackers in a number of high-profile vehicle breaches. Automotive and technology companies are taking these threats seriously. In this age of big data, there are serious concerns about consumer privacy protection, with many questioning how companies will use and retain personal data collected from self-driving cars. In the last few months, various consumer groups and some legislators have voiced concerns about the lack of legislation addressing privacy and security issues in connected vehicles. Recently released government guidelines provide some further guidance, but it remains uncertain whether these will truly protect autonomous vehicles from being hacked in the future.
