Brexit in Transition (Hosted by UC Berkeley)

Following the results of the BREXIT referendum, the UK left the EU on 31 January. This was followed by a transition, during which time the UK remains in both the EU customs union and single market. The transition period was meant to allow the UK and the EU to reach an agreement on a free-trade deal. However, such a deal has not yet been reached and the transition will be ending on 31 December 2020, with no extension possible. Besides trade, many other aspects of the future UK-EU relationship (fishing waters, immigration, law enforcement, etc.) still need to be decided.

IES Director Jeroen Dewulf and Terri Bimes (Associate Teaching Professor in the Charles and Louise Travers Department of Political Science, UC Berkeley) will discuss the current situation of the negotiations and attempt to get a clearer understanding of how Brexit could look after the transition ends with IES Senior Fellow Matt Beech and Professor of Political Science Mark Bevir.


Panelists:

Dr. Matt Beech is founding Director of the Centre for British Politics and Reader in Politics in the Department of Politics at the University of Hull. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Associate Member of the Centre de Recherches en Civilisation Britannique, Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris 3 and a Member of the Heterodox Academy. In 2017, Matt was an IES Visiting Scholar in the Centre for British Studies. A political scientist and historian who teaches post-war British political history, government and ideas, he is the author or editor of nine books and numerous essays and articles on British politics. He is currently researching a monograph entitled, From Blair to Brexit (Palgrave Macmillan, 2021).

Mark Bevir is Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for British Studies, University of California, Berkeley. He is also Professor of Governance, United Nations University (MERIT), and Professor, Political Economy, King's College, London. He is currently the general editor of The Oxford History of Political Thought, and he has been editor of Journal of the Philosophy of History, associate editor of Journal of Moral Philosophy, President of the Society for the Philosophy of History, and Chair of the Interpretive Politics Group (PSA). Mark has been a policy consultant for governmental organizations in Asia, Europe, and North America, as well as for the United Nations and its agencies. Mark's research interests in political theory include moral philosophy, political philosophy, and history of political thought. His methodological interests cover philosophy of social science, philosophy of history, and history of social science. His work on public policy focuses on organization theory, democratic theory, and governance. His current research includes projects on multiculturalism and postcolonialism, genealogy and governmentality, and democratic innovations.
