The pandemic has had a profound effect on the world. Its long term affects are still being determined, but one of the early stage developments is its impact on the future of international cities. 2020 shone a light on some of the acute challenge being faced by urban areas as people swapped their city life for extra space and comfort in more rural areas. The pandemic has become a catalyst for many cities to reconsider their approach to economic, social and urban structures, so that they can evolve and remain home to people in a post pandemic world.

The evolution of global hubs such as New York and London has been referenced, but perhaps the strongest attention and sense of challenge has been reserved for Silicon Valley. The birthplace of innovation and home to so many of the world’s most famous tech companies. Recent articles by Forbes, the Financial Times and the SF Chronicle are all amongst those that are questioning its future and whether its position as the center for tech is under threat.
