In celebration of Pride month taking place across the world, the British Consulate General San Francisco is supporting LGBTQ+ organisations by bringing together communities in the US and UK to make connections and shareexperiences. In this event Deputy Consul General Tammy Sandhu will host a fireside chat with Lady Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, the co-founder and Executive Director of UK Black Pride and Carolyn Wysinger, Board President of SanFrancisco Pride. This will be an opportunity for our speakers and participants to share experiences of the LGBTQ+black communities on both sides of the Atlantic and to understand the challenges and opportunities facing us inmaking Pride as inclusive as possible.In celebration of Pride month taking place across the world, the British Consulate General San Francisco is supportingLGBTQ+ organisations by bringing together communities in the US and UK to make connections and share experiences.
Lady Phyll Opoku-Gyimah is the nucleus of the award-winning celebration and protest that is UK Black Pride. Founded in 2005,UK Black Pride is Europe’s largest celebration for LGBTQ people of African, Asian, Caribbean, Middle Eastern and Latin Americandescent, and is a safe space to celebrate diverse sexualities, gender identities, gender expressions and cultures. Widely knownas Lady Phyll she is also the executive director of Kaleidoscope Trust, an organisation working to uphold the human rights ofLGBTQI+ people around the world.
Carolyn Wysinger has worked fiercely in the LGBTQ community in a plethora of capacities, including in her current second termas Board President of San Francisco Pride. Carolyn is an author and blogger has written timely and insightful articles for blogssuch as Everyday Feminism, Black Girl Dangerous and Media Diversified. She has also published her first book KnockturnalEmissions. Carolyn is actively involved in California politics as a recently elected delegate to California Assembly District 15. Sheis also a former commissioner of Human Rights & Relations for the City of Richmond.
