On June 13, 2012, BABC Northern California is hosting a half-day conference in Silicon Valley to discuss the future growth of automotive technology - and how a whole range of businesses from other industries could and should be getting involved.
From battery power and electric vehicle charging solutions to microprocessors, infotainment systems and the network connectivity between cars and mobile devices, our panel of experts will be analyzing a wide range of opportunities for innovation and development.
Not to mention the ultimate computerized vehicle – the self-driving car.
Our speakers will also be putting the spotlight on the present and future investment climate surrounding automotive technologies.
Held at Silicon Valley Bank's Kellogg Auditorium in Santa Clara, there will be time throughout the afternoon for networking with fellow senior executives. We’ll be rounding off the day with drinks on the patio.

The event will begin with a joint address from Simon Segars, EVP and General Manager of the Physical IP Division at ARM Technologies and Taner Ozcelik, Automotive General Manager at NVIDIA. We'll be setting out an introduction to the whole concept of the “Connected Car” - opening up the discussion on the challenge of bridging the gap between consumer electronics and the computing power of our vehicles. With diverse opportunities for innovation reaching far beyond the automotive industry alone, we’ll be focusing on why these technologies are such an important area of development today, and how we can expect to see them grow exponentially in future.
2.10 - 3pm Panel 1: Current Challenges
Our first panel will look at the current technological challenges faced by innovators, moderated by Richard Waters, West Coast Editor of the Financial Times and featuring Maryline Daviaud Lewett, Business Development Manager for Electric Vehicle Business at Schneider Electric, Jit Bhattacharya, CEO of Mission Motors and Rich Meyer, Director at PwC's PRTM Management Consulting. The dream of connected, computerized, fully electric vehicles - including the self-driving car - has fascinated science fiction writers and tech gurus for years. We'll be discussing the challenges - of battery power, electric vehicle charging and network connectivity, which are being faced by developers as they turn that vision into reality.

The second panel will focus on the future opportunities opened up by this rapidly expanding sector. Our panel, moderated by Andy Tsao of Silicon Valley Bank, includes Dr Sven Beiker of the Stanford Centre for Automotive Research, Michael Finegan, West Area M2M Manager at Sprint, Jason Wolf, VP of North America at Better Place - will be discussing how the connected car will evolve over the next few years. We’ll be putting the spotlight on pivotal areas of future inter-disciplinary research and development as well as global opportunities for accessing talent and funding.
4.20 - 5pm Fireside Chat
The day’s program will conclude with a Fireside Chat between Gerald Brady of Silicon Valley Bank and Mark Platshon, Senior Advisor to BMW’s i-Ventures Corporate VC fund and Managing Director of Icebreaker Ventures, who will be discussing the present and future investment climate surrounding automotive technologies.

Simon Segars
EVP and General Manager Processors and Physical IP, ARM Technologies
Simon Segars joined the Board of ARM Technologies in January 2005 and was appointed EVP and General Manager of the Processor and Physical IP Divisions in March 2012, having previously run the Physical IP Division since September 2007. Before that he has been EVP, Engineering, EVP, Worldwide Sales and latterly EVP, Business Development. He joined ARM in early 1991 and worked on many of the early ARM CPU products. He led the development of the ARM7 and ARM9 Thumb® families. He holds a number of patents in the field of embedded CPU architectures. He is a director of SOI Industry Consortium and a director of EDA Consortium.
Taner Ozcelik
General Manager, Automotive Business Unit, NVIDIA
Taner Ozcelik is General Manager of NVIDIA’s Automotive Business Unit, focusing on solutions that enable faster and better design of automobiles, as well as in-vehicle solutions for infotainment, navigation, digital instrument clusters and advanced driver assistance systems. Prior to joining NVIDIA in 2004, he was President and CEO at MobileSmarts, as well as Vice President and General Manager of the Digital Home Platform division at Sony Electronics, where he developed DTV and audio DSP semiconductors. Taner earned an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Northwestern University.
Jit Bhattacharya
Chief Executive Officer, Mission Motors
Jit Bhattacharya has served as Mission Motors' CEO since 2009. He began his career as an engineer at Velocity11 (now part of Agilent). He first got involved in the energy industry in 2005 while designing and implementing solar energy systems for off-grid businesses in South Africa. In 2007, Mr. Bhattacharya worked at the venture capital fund, Spring Ventures where he focused on lithium-ion battery technology and the array of business models driving the emerging electric vehicle industry. Mr. Bhattacharya holds a Master's in mechanical engineering from Stanford and an MBA from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.
Maryline Daviaud Lewett
Business Development Manager, EV Business, Schneider Electric
Maryline Daviaud Lewett has joined Schneider Electric, North America as Business Development Manager, EV Business, Western US. She manages business development, sales, strategic partnerships and channel development for EV Charging Infrastructure and the EVlink product family. Maryline has a proven sales track record of over 15 years in the media, technology, green technology, life sciences and social enterprise.
Her diverse past experience includes the position of Sales Director, Northwest Region, Akamai Technologies, Director of Business Development at TechSoup Global, VP Business Development at CNL Scientific Resources, and National Sales Director at International Channel Networks. She consulted for RealChange Network and EcoTensil Inc., incorporating the latest social media tools training for key clients. Maryline has been active on the volunteer front and was Executive Director of FASTCned (French After-School Tutoring), a non-profit organization teaching foreign languages for children She received her MBA in Sustainable Management from the Presidio Graduate School in 2006, a BA in Economics from Nantes University and a Master level in Communications from CELSA, Paris-I University.
Rich Meyer
Director, PwC’s PRTM Management Consulting
Rich Meyer is a Director with PwC’s PRTM Management Consulting CleanTech Sector. Meyer has more than 18 years experience in operations management across a range of industries, including cleantech, energy, automotive, and medical equipment with a particular focus on product and service innovation and operational strategy and planning. He has consulted to leading investor owned utilities on generation interconnection and sustainable solutions and recently led the development of a fleet sustainability strategy for a major California utility.
Prior to joining PRTM, Meyer held management, engineering, and operations positions at Ford Motor Company where he also led hybrid electric vehicle strategy for Pickup Truck and Commercial Vehicles. Prior to Ford, he served as a nuclear submarine officer in the United States Navy and currently serves as the Commanding Officer of a Submarine Force Expeditionary Maintenance unit in the U.S. Navy Reserve. Meyer holds a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley and an MBA from the University of Michigan.
Richard Waters
San Francisco Bureau Chief, West Coast Editor – Financial Times
Richard Waters is the West Coast Editor for the Financial Times. His beat covers the technology industry. Before moving to the West Coast, Mr Waters was based in the FT's New York office for nine years. His roles there included Wall Street reporter, New York bureau chief, and the FT's first information industries editor, overseeing global coverage of technology, tele-communications and media. He previously worked at the FT in London where he held a number of positions, including editor of international capital markets, securities industry correspondent and accountancy and taxation correspondent.
In 2004, he was awarded Corporate Finance Reporter of the Year for his coverage of Google's IPO. He was shortlisted for the Business & Finance Reporter of the Year award at the British Press Awards in 2003 and won the award in 1992 as part of a team covering the BCCI scandal. In 1988, he was named Accountancy Journalist of the Year. He appears regularly on the BBC, CNBC, MSNBC, CNNfn and NPR. Mr Waters received his Bachelor's degree from St. Edmund Hall, Oxford University.
Sven A. Beiker, PhD
Executive Director, Center for Automotive Research at Stanford School of Engineering
Since 2008 Dr. Beiker has been overseeing the strategic planning, resources management, and project incubation for the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford (CARS). Besides managing the industry relationships, he holds teaching positions at Stanford's School of Engineering and the Graduate School of Business. He was instrumental in launching research programs at Stanford University in "Legal Aspects of Autonomous Driving" and "Wireless Power Transfer to a Moving Vehicle" as well as "The Revs Program at Stanford" and the "Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Lab".
Before coming to Stanford, Dr. Beiker worked at the BMW Group for more than 13 year where his responsibilities included technology scouting, innovation management, systems design, and series development. He holds several patents in chassis and powertrain technologies.
Jason Wolf
Vice President North America, Better Place
Jason Wolf is vice president of North America for Better Place. His responsibilities include overseeing the company’s efforts in California, Hawaii and Ontario and developing other North American markets. Within the energy and transportation ecosystems, Wolf works with federal, state and local governments as well as utility, business and non-governmental stakeholders to make the vision of zero- emission EVs powered by renewable energy a reality.
Wolf built a strong management track record in the IT industry before joining Better Place. His experience includes various positions in senior management, strategic planning, product launch, sales and professional services. He most recently served as president of Sterna Technologies USA, the pioneer of Business Positioning Systems software. Before joining Sterna, Wolf held a number of positions during a 10-year career at SAP AG, including senior vice president of Strategic Initiatives and senior vice president of New Product Introductions. Wolf has a B.A. in Economics and Psychology from the University of Tel-Aviv anan MBA from San Jose State University.
Michael Finegan
Sprint Emerging Solutions Group - West Area M2M, Manager, Solutions Engineering
Michael is a member of Sprint’s Emerging Solutions Group (ESG) and leads the West Area M2M Solution Engineering team.. Sprint’s ESG charter is to identify and seek out high value retail and wholesale machine-to-machine and embedded systems solutions across all channels and all markets. He is on Sprint’s M2M Collaboration Center Advisory Council created to develop new ecosystem partners to support “Rapid Solution Development” that leverage CDMA (1xRTT advanced and 3G) , and 4G technologies including WiMAX and LTE.
Michael has been in the telecommunications industry for 14 years and started his tenure at Sprint in 1997. Michael specializes in designing Wireless and Wire Line WAN topologies, implementing Machine-to-Machine and Telemetry solutions as well as MPLS, Dedicated IP, IP Telephony, SIP Trunking. He previously provided technical sales support for a systems integration company, selling client server applications and consulting services.
Andy Tsao
Managing Director with SVB Global Private Equity Services
Andy Tsao is a Managing Director with SVB Global Private Equity Services, working with SVB’s international private equity and venture capital clients. In addition, Tsao leads SVB’s Global Gateway, which assists innovation companies with their international market expansion. He brings more than 20 years of experience banking dynamic companies in technology industries worldwide.
Previously, Tsao led and helped found SVB’s U.K.-based operation, SVB Financial Group UK Ltd, which was established in 2004. For six years, he was responsible for building senior debt relationships with high-growth technology, life sciences and clean technology companies in the U.K. and Europe.
Prior to joining Silicon Valley Bank in 1997, Tsao was a technology lender at BankBoston, and BayBank in Burlington, Mass. He began his banking career with USTrust in Boston in 1988. Tsao earned a bachelor’s degree from Colgate University and an MBA from Boston University.
Gerald Brady
Managing Director, Silicon Valley Bank’s Venture Capital Group
Gerald Brady is a managing director within SVB’s Venture Capital Group, hired to lead two important initiatives for the company. He is responsible for leading SVB’s Entrepreneur Services Group as well as the company’s work with corporate venture and corporate development groups.
Brady oversees a team dedicated to supporting emerging technology and life science companies, by engaging founders and CEOs with relevant, high-impact programming and networking events to add significant value during their development stages. Brady also maintains and develops relationships with corporate venture and corporate development groups, which the company believes will play an increasingly important role in the venture ecosystem in the future.
Prior to joining SVB, Brady served as the director of investor relations for Siemens AG, where he was responsible for all aspects of investor communications in North America.Brady holds an honors degree from Kingston University, an MBA from Cranfield University and he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Brady served as chairman of the NVCA’s Corporate Venture Group from 2006-2007.
Mark Platshon
Senior Advisor to BMW’s i-Ventures Corporate VC Fund and Managing Director of Icebreaker Ventures
Mark Platshon is Senior Advisor to BMW’s i-Ventures corporate VC fund. i-Ventures is helping BMW expand into a diverse array of connected car mobility services and EV technologies. Previously Mark was a partner in the Cleantech group at VantagePoint and a Silicon Valley CEO for 20+ years.
Before joining the venture capital world, Mark was a serial Silicon Valley CEO for over 20 years, including ELO, Idetek, Zing, Ancore, and Capnia. He was co-founder of Amprius, an advanced Lithium-ion battery company spun out of Stanford University. He was an early investor in Tesla. He has served as a Director of numerous companies, including Synxis, acquired by Sabre; Everdream, acquired by Dell; Solexant, Amprius, GLO, Serious Materials, Idetek, ELO, Ancore, Zing and Capnia.
Mark earned a BSE in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan, studied Nuclear Engineering at the Westinghouse Naval Reactor School and obtained his MBA from Stanford University. As a Lieutenant in the Navy, Mark had a joint Navy and Department of Energy appointment to Admiral Rickover’s nuclear submarine engineering staff. Personally, Mark is a cyclist and avid automobile hobbiest.
