Jon Haveman
Principal & Former Chief Economist at the Bay Area Council Economic Institute, Marin Economic Consulting
Jon Haveman is a Principal at Marin Economic Consulting, an economic research and consulting firm specializing in entrepreneurship and local economic development issues. Dr. Haveman is an expert on regional economies and local economic development and on the Bay Area Economy in particular. He is also widely considered to be one of California’s leading experts on the economics of seaports, goods movement, and international trade policy.
Prior to founding Marin Economic Consulting, Dr. Haveman was the Chief Economist at the Bay Area Council Economic Institute, a founding principal at Beacon Economics, and the Director of the Economy Program at the Public Policy Institute of California. He has been a Senior Economist with the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, an Economist with the Federal Trade Commission, and held a faculty position in the Business School at Purdue University.
A prolific author, Dr. Haveman has published extensively on local economic development policy, transportation and security issues at California’s seaports, business outsourcing, and trade in technology products.
Dr. Haveman holds a Ph.D. and Master of Science in Economics from The University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Wisconsin.
Jeff Deiss
Export Finance Manager – International Trade Finance, US Small Business Administration
Jeff Deiss is a Regional Export Finance Manager with the US Small Business Administration (SBA), a position he has held since 2011. He is one of 20 such SBA loan officers in the nation who provide export financing assistance as part of the suite of services available from multi-agency US Export Assistance Centers (USEAC’s). After working 2 years in Portland, OR, Jeff opened SBA’s San Francisco, CA export office in late 2013.
He works with exporters and commercial lenders in northern and central California to find export financing solutions for small businesses. He also serves as the team leader for all of SBA’s export finance officers in the Western US.
Prior to joining SBA, Jeff was involved in commercial lending at USDA Rural Development where he was responsible for delivering a variety of financing programs to address the needs of rural communities. From 2005 to 2011, Jeff was USDA’s Business Programs Director in Oregon where he oversaw the delivery of business financing and economic development programs. He began his career with USDA in 1983 doing agricultural lending.
Jeff holds an MS and BS from the University of California Davis, and a BA from Claremont McKenna College.
Ivan Asensio, PhD
Senior Vice President and Head of FX Risk Advisory for HSBC Americas, HSBC Bank
Ivan Oscar Asensio overseas a group at HSBC dedicated to working with corporate and institutional investors on solving issues related to currency risk. The focus is two-fold. Quantitative techniques are applied to identify and quantify the impact of gyrating exchange rates on key performance metrics such as margins, revenue growth, earnings-per-share (EPS), global portfolio returns, alpha generation. Once the risks and opportunities are understood, a solution is tailored to the specific objectives, risk tolerance, desired accounting treatment, credit constraints, target tracking error, portfolio drawdown limits of the institution or fund. Academically, Dr. Asensio received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He also holds an M.S. in Statistics from UCLA and dual-undergraduate degrees in Finance and Mathematics from USC.

Christopher is a dynamic professional with global experience creating and maintaining relationships with Global 1000 companies around the world. In addition to over a decade of banking experience, he has international industry experience in technology working overseas and providing economic development expertise after working for Thüringen, Germany soliciting US companies interested in Greenfield investment.
Christopher graduated from the University of California-Santa Barbara and the Pacific Coast Banking School, University of Washington and enjoys living and sailing in the Bay Area.
